形态特征（Description）：灌木或乔木，高1.5-4（-6）米，树干和老枝栗红色，枝直立；幼枝及嫩枝质硬直伸而不下垂。叶灰蓝绿色，木质化生长枝上基部的叶阔卵形，急尖，上部的叶卵状披针形，急尖，长均约2-3毫米，先端均呈尖刺状，基部向外鼓胀；绿色嫩枝上的叶长圆形或长圆状披针形，渐尖，基部亦向外鼓胀。春和夏秋均开花；春季开花，总状花序自去年生的木质化的枝上发出，侧生，花序轴质硬而直伸，长3-4厘米，宽0.5厘米，着花较密，有短总花梗或无梗；有苞叶或无，苞叶蓝绿色，宽卵形，突渐尖，基部渐狭；苞片线状披针形，浅白或带紫蓝绿色；花梗极短。夏、秋季开花，总状花序较春季的狭细，组成顶生大型圆锥花序，生当年生幼枝上，多挺直向上；花5数，萼片5，卵形，急尖，绿色，边缘膜质透明；花瓣5，倒卵状长圆形，淡紫红色，顶端向外反折，花后宿存。花盘5裂，顶端微缺，紫红色；雄蕊5，伸出花瓣之外，花丝丝状，着于花盘裂片间，花药红色；子房三棱状卵圆形，红色，花柱与子房等长，柱头3，下弯。蒴果长圆锥形，长约5毫米。花期5-9月。
分布（Distribution）：产青海、甘肃、宁夏、内蒙古、陕西、山西、河北及河南等省区，生于盐渍化河漫滩及冲积平原，盐碱沙荒地及灌溉盐碱地边。
用途（Use）：本种性喜水，也能耐干旱、盐碱和霜冻，为黄河中游半干旱和半湿润地区、黄土高原及山坡的主要水土保持林和用柴林造林树种。枝条坚韧，为编筐原料，老枝用作农具柄。

Leaves gray-green, 2-3 mm, base turgid; those in lower part of growing branches broadly ovate, apex acute; those in upper part ovate-lanceolate, apex acute. Flowers blooming in spring, summer, and autumn. When blooming in spring, racemes lateral in ligneous branches of previous year; inflorescence axis straight, ascending, 3-4 × ca. 0.5 cm, hard in texture, densely flowered; peduncles short or absent; bracts whitish or purple-green, linear-lanceolate; pedicels very short. When blooming in summer and autumn, racemes smaller than those in spring, forming terminal large panicles on young branches of current year, mostly straight and ascending; flowers 5-merous; sepals 5, green, ovate, margin membranous and pellucid, apex acute; petals 5, purplish red, obovate-oblong, apex reflexed, persistent after anthesis; disk purple-red, 5-lobed; lobes emarginate at apex; stamens 5, exserted; filaments filiform, inserted between disk lobes; anthers red; ovary triqueter-ovoid, red; styles ca. as long as ovary; stigmas 3, recurved. Capsule narrowly conic, ca. 5 mm. Fl. May-Sep.
