形态特征（Description）：直立灌木或小乔木，通常高为2-5米，稀达12米；树皮深灰色；枝条细长；除幼枝、叶背、叶柄、托叶和雌花的萼片外面被柔毛或短柔毛外，其余均无毛。叶片纸质，长圆形、长椭圆形或倒卵状长圆形，稀近圆形，长3-9厘米，宽1.5-4厘米，顶端锐尖至钝，基部宽楔形至近圆，叶面粗涩，叶背浅绿色；侧脉每边9 12条，与支脉在叶面明显，在叶背凸起；叶柄长3-5毫米；托叶线状披针形，长约7毫米，顶端刚毛状渐尖，常早落。花雌雄同株或异株，簇生于叶腋；雄花：花梗极短；萼片三角形，长约1.2毫米，宽约l毫米；花瓣倒卵形，膜质，顶端3-5齿裂；花丝下部与退化雌蕊贴生；退化雌蕊倒圆锥形；花盘浅杯状；雌花：几无花梗；通常3-5朵簇生；萼片三角形，长和宽约1毫米；花瓣倒卵形或匙形，顶端全缘或有齿裂，比萼片短；花盘坛状，包围子房；子房卵圆形，花柱2深裂，裂片线形。核果近圆球形，直径4-7毫米，2室；种子褐红色，长卵形，长3.5-4毫米，宽约3毫米，腹面压扁状，有纵槽，背面稍凸起，有纵条纹。花果期几乎全年。
分布（Distribution）：产福建、台湾、广东、海南、广西和云南，生于海拔100-1500米山地疏林中或平原灌木林中。亚洲东南部，经印度尼西亚、马来西亚至澳大利亚也有。
用途（Use）：药用。叶治外伤出血、跌打损伤；根治感冒、神经衰弱、月经不调等。树皮可提取栲胶，含鞣质8.08%。

Flowers axillary, yellow-green, up to 10(-20)-fascicled, sessile. Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Taiwan, Yunnan [Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, E India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam; N Australia].
Since indumentum density varies widely, no varieties should be recognized based on this character (see Forster, Austrobaileya 5: 416. 1999). Merrill identified Clutia monoica Loureiro as this species and published the combination Bridelia monoica (Loureiro) Merrill, but Loureiro’s plant is not this species. The name "Bridelia chinensis Müller Argoviensis" also belongs here but was never validly published.
The leaves are used as medicine for traumatic injury; the roots are used to treat epidemic influenza and neurasthenia. The bark yields up to 8% tannin.
